Clipboard history: how to view it on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone
Windows and Android include a browsable history in different places. macOS and iPhone keep only the current copied item. Here is the fastest route on each platform.
On Windows, press Windows key + V. On Android, open the clipboard panel in Gboard or Samsung Keyboard. macOS and iPhone do not include a browsable clipboard history: they keep only the current item, so you need to paste it somewhere or use a clipboard manager to retain earlier copies.
How this guide was checked
Platform behavior and menu paths were checked against current Microsoft, Apple, Google and Android documentation on August 23, 2026. Clypy product details were checked against version 0.2.3.
Clipboard history by platform
| Platform | Built-in history | How to open it | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 & 11 | Yes | Press Windows key + V | 25 items; pinned items survive restarts |
| macOS | No | Finder → Edit → Show Clipboard shows the current item | 1 current item |
| Android | Usually provided by the keyboard | Tap Clipboard in Gboard or Samsung Keyboard | Gboard clears unpinned clips shortly after use |
| iPhone & iPad | No | Paste into Notes or another text field | 1 current item |
Windows: press Windows key + V
Windows 10 and 11 have a built-in history that holds up to 25 copied items. Press Windows key + V and choose Turn on if prompted. You can paste an earlier item, pin something you want to keep across restarts, or clear the list from the same panel.
- 1Press Windows key + V.
- 2Choose Turn on if clipboard history is disabled.
- 3Select an item to paste it, or open its menu to pin or delete it.
Mac: there is no built-in history
macOS keeps the current clipboard item but does not retain a browsable list of earlier copies. With Finder active, Edit → Show Clipboard displays the current item. Copying something else replaces it. A third-party clipboard manager is required for searchable history.
Android: open your keyboard's clipboard
Android supplies the system clipboard, while the history people browse is normally provided by their keyboard. In Gboard, open any text field, tap Clipboard in the toolbar and pin anything you want to retain. Samsung Keyboard offers a similar clipboard panel.
Keyboard behavior varies by manufacturer. Google says Gboard clears unpinned history shortly after it was last used, while pinned text remains until you remove it.
iPhone: paste the current item to see it
iOS has no clipboard-history screen. To inspect the current item, paste it into Notes or another safe text field. Apple restricts background pasteboard access, so apps that retain history use explicit surfaces such as a keyboard extension or share sheet.
When a clipboard manager becomes useful
Built-in history is enough when you only need a few recent text clips on one platform. A dedicated manager becomes useful when you need searchable history, more durable retention, images and files, or the same clipboard across different operating systems. Because copied content can include passwords and tokens, check how any manager handles sensitive data before installing it.
Common questions
How do I check my clipboard history?
Press Windows key + V on Windows, or open the Clipboard panel in your Android keyboard. Mac and iPhone do not have a built-in history, so they can only show or paste the current clipboard item without a third-party app.
Where is clipboard history stored?
It depends on the platform. Windows stores its own 25-item history. On Android, the browsable list normally belongs to the keyboard. macOS and iOS keep only the current clipboard item unless an installed app records more.
Can I recover something I copied earlier?
Only if clipboard history or a clipboard manager was already enabled before the item was replaced. Turning history on afterward cannot recover an earlier copy that the operating system discarded.
Does clipboard history sync between devices?
Windows can sync supported clipboard content between Windows PCs. Apple's Universal Clipboard carries the current item between nearby Apple devices but does not create a history. A cross-platform history requires an app installed on each platform.
